ENHANCING SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE |
As global demand for fish continues to rise, marine ecosystems face increasing pressure from overfishing and unsustainable aquaculture practices. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), over 90% of the world’s fish stocks are either fully exploited or overfished, leading to significant ecological damage and threatening food security for millions.
Icelandic startup Laxey, founded in 2017, focuses on utilizing land-based aquaculture systems to farm high-quality salmon. These systems significantly reduce the environmental impact by eliminating the need for ocean-based net pens, which are often associated with habitat destruction and pollution. Laxey's technology ensures that the water used in their systems is continuously recycled and purified, minimizing waste and preventing the spread of diseases to wild fish populations. The firm has recently closed a EUR 6 Mln equity private placement.
Next Tuna, a German company founded in 2019, focuses on the breeding and farming of the Atlantic bluefin tuna, a species particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Their approach involves breeding bluefin tuna in captivity. By closing the life cycle of bluefin tuna in floating facilities, the startup aims to provide a sustainable alternative to wild-caught tuna, reducing the pressure on wild populations while fostering responsible breeding, protection and farming of the species. |
