REINVENTING PET FOOD 🌍 The pet food industry, valued at over USD 100 Bln globally, faces increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact. A significant portion of resources – estimates suggest up to 30% of meat consumed in the US – is allocated to pet food production. 🐕 London-based Meatly, a cell-cultivated meat company has developed the world's first cultivated pet food. Their key innovation is a protein-free culture medium that significantly reduces production costs, solving one of the industry’s major bottlenecks. Culture media are essential to the production of cultivated meat, entailing a mix of nutrients to facilitate the growth of animal cells. 🐜 Entoma Petfood, a French company, produces insect-based pet food. Raising insects for protein requires less land and water compared to traditional livestock. Moreover, insect protein is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for pets with sensitive stomachs.

TACKLING THE FASHION WASTE 👕 A significant portion of textiles does not get sold leading to mountains of clothing piling up in landfills. This excessive production has a devastating environmental impact, as it consumes vast amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. 🇩🇰 Rodinia Generation, a Copenhagen-based fashion-tech company founded by Trine Y., is tackling this challenge. Their innovative manufacturing methods drastically reduce water usage and carbon emissions compared to traditional garment production, with a special focus on dyeing and finishing garments. Furthermore, by producing clothes on-demand in its microfactories, it aims to eliminate overproduction entirely. 💸 The startup has secured EUR 3 Mln in funding from Article 9 investor Climentum Capital and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO). The capital will be used to expand their production capabilities across Europe before entering the global market.

REINVENTING FOOD PRESERVATION 🌍 According to the World Food Programme and the FAO, a third of all food produced is wasted annually and food waste is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. 🥒 Against that background, Sweden-based Saveggy has developed an edible plant-based coating that extends the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables by 3x and reduces the reliance on plastic. Their first product on the market is tailored to cucumbers but their technology can be customized to suit the specific requirements of various vegetables and fruits. ♻ Likewise, Apeel, a California-based company, utilizes a plant-based protection derived from substances already found in the skins, peels, and seeds of all fruits and vegetables to protect fresh produce after it has been picked up. By maintaining moisture and reducing oxidation, this Apeel’s extra “peel” supports the plant’s natural abilities to protect against environmental stress and drastically slows the rate produce spoils.
